Gregory bags brace in Talbot testimonial

11 July 2023

A record pre-season attendance at Chesterfield saw Wednesday emerge winners by the odd goal in three in this testimonial fixture for Drew Talbot.

Over 4,000 Wednesdayites made the short hop to Derbyshire as both teams honoured their former striker.

Talbot received a warm welcome from all four sides of the SMH Group Stadium before the game, which saw Jeff King give the Spireites a half time lead.

But Lee Gregory came off the bench to score at the start and finish of his evening’s work.

The hosts started the game well, threatening to open up the Owls defence with neat passing movements.

But it was Wednesday that almost struck first when Michael Smith took a high punt from the sky and turned to loft over stranded keeper Harry Tyrer only to see the ball land on top of the net.

Chesterfield went one better nine minutes before the break as they hit the front. Tom Naylor found space down the right to advance and cross low and hard for King to bundle home.

Cameron Dawson then denied Ollie Banks with a smart reflex save, keeping the score at 1-0 going into half time.

Wednesday made a host of changes at the break, which paid dividends just two minutes after the restart.

Dominic Iorfa motored down the right and picked out Gregory, who cleverly clipped over Tyrer and into the far corner.

Dawson made an impressive double save, thwarting Will Grigg and Ash Palmer, before the Spireites changed their entire outfield team with 20 minutes to go.

There was little action of note to follow until right at the last when Josh Windass found Gregory unmarked at the back post and the striker did the necessaries from close range.

Wednesday: Dawson (Charles 60), Brennan (Fusire 46), Iorfa (Alimi-Adetoro 60), Famewo (Phuthi 60), Vaulks (Glover 46), James (Flannery 60), Cook (Onukwuli 60), Johnson (Shipston 60; Byers 80), Bannan (Bakinson 46), Paterson (Windass 46), Smith (Gregory 46)
