Windass nets in pre-season opener

8 July 2023

Wednesday eased into pre-season action with a 1-1 draw at National League side York.

The friendly marked the beginning of the Xisco Muñoz era as the new Wednesday manager effectively fielded two separate teams either side of half time.

The Owls dominated the first half, stroking the ball confidently around the plush LNER Community Stadium pitch.

Dominic Iorfa went close with a towering header and Lee Gregory forced a fine save from Ryan Whitley after breaking free down the left of the area.

Wednesday were not to be denied and broke through on 26 minutes. Adam Crookes’ backpass was underhit and misdirected, allowing Josh Windass to nip in and round Whitley to score.

The hosts were limited to just one chance before the break when Lenell John-Lewis was inches off target from just outside the box.

The Owls made eight changes for the start of the second period and a further three on the hour.

Cameron Dawson stayed between the sticks for the restart before making way for Pierce Charles and in-between made a smart save to keep out Scott Burgess’ set piece.

The Minstermen posed more of a threat in the second half and got their reward on 59 minutes. A swift counter down the left saw Maz Kouhyar’s low cross converted at the far post by Finlay Barnes to give York an overall deserved share of the spoils.

Wednesday: Dawson (Charles 60), Brennan (Fusire 60), Iorfa (Alimi-Adetoro 46), Famewo (Ihiekwe 46), James (Flannery 46), Cook (Phuthi 60), Bannan (Vaulks 46), Bakinson (Glover 46), Johnson (Onukwuli 46), Windass (Paterson 46), Gregory (Smith 46)
