Owls sign off in Spain

21 July 2023

The Owls signed off in Spain with a 4-0 defeat against CD Eldense.

Wednesday now return home to England, where far more manageable conditions await.

For context, when the stadium big screen overheats, it’s a fair indication of the blazing heatwave engulfing parts of Europe.

Spain has taken the full force, with temperatures touching 40 degrees here in Murcia and the sun was unforgiving throughout this friendly fixture.

Segunda Liga Eldense inevitably adapted well and ran out worthy winners.

The first goal came 14 minutes in and was worthy of any contest. Little seemed on for Arnau Ortiz, taking possession 25 yards out, but the midfielder moved his feet to fire a beauty that curled away from Cameron Dawson and into the back of the net.

Ten minutes before a welcome break, it was 2-0. A neat four-man move cut the Wednesday rearguard open and Juanto Ortuno raced down the right of the box to unleash a fierce angled hit that doubled the lead.

Eldense made 10 changes for the second half, while Wednesday shuffled the pack in stages.

The tempo stayed the same, though, and the second period was a more even affair until Eldense put the game out of the Owls’ reach with two quickfire strikes.

First, on 79 minutes, Joel Jorquera space in the penalty area and looked up to drive hard and low into the far corner.

Then just moments later, Ivan Chapela raced clear down the middle and kept his composure to finish calmly past Pierce Charles.

Xisco stressed ahead of the game that the main takeaway would be valuable minutes into the legs and the Owls depart the Costa Brava to continue preparations for the big Championship kick-off against Southampton.

Wednesday: Dawson (Charles 80), Iorfa, Ihiekwe (Adetoro 84), Adetoro (Famewo 46, James (Johnson 81), Fusire (Johnson 84) Vaulks (Glover 61), Bakinson (Cook 81), Bannan (Shipston 61), Windass (Paterson 81), Gregory (Smith 61)
