Owls v Real Murcia - countdown to kick-off

18 July 2023

It’s day four here in Spain and the Owls are preparing for the first of two friendlies against local opposition this week.

Wednesday take on Real Murcia tonight at the Pinatar Arena, kick-off 8:00pm (7:00pm UK).

The warm weather training sessions so far have been intense, with specific early morning and early evening timings designed around the soaring Costa Blanca temperatures.

Xisco has stressed the results will not take precedence, with all the focus geared towards the big kick-off on 4 August against Southampton at Hillsborough.

The new manager will shuffle his pack once more tonight, with each member of the squad expected to get valuable minutes into the legs.

Skipper Barry Bannan says Xisco’s methods are having the desired effect as the countdown continues to our 2023/24 Championship campaign.

Bannan said: “It’s been brilliant to be fair, we’ve had intense double sessions and they’ve been really enjoyable. The style of play the manager wants us to play is aggressive, front-foot football.

“Obviously, everything is not going to happen overnight, there’s been a lot of information to take in in a short space of time.

“We’re learning and listening every day, everybody in that changing room has a point to prove now we will be playing in a higher division again.

“We want to aim for the stars, we’re not going to the Championship to consolidate and it’s all about preparation now.

“It’s important we don’t look too much into these pre-season games, pre-season is all about getting as fit as you can so we can hit the ground running when we kick off against Southampton.”
