Report | Real Murcia 0-0 Wednesday

18 July 2023

The Owls played out a 0-0 draw with Real Murcia in the first of our two friendly fixtures here in Spain.

Goals may have been absent but credit goes to both teams for a fast-paced contest in soaring temperatures on the Costa Brava.

Still in the mid-30s at kick-off time of 8:00pm, the intense heat inevitably played a part, although the tempo was admirably high.

There were chances - Dominic Iorfa cleared a Pablo Gant shot off the line inside five minutes and likewise Jay Glover from Dani Vega later in the first half as Murcia looked the more likely.

But Wednesday grew into the game and Iorfa made a nuisance of himself at the other end, heading a Josh Windass corner narrowly off target.

The managers shuffled their pack at the break and Lee Gregory went close to making a key contribution with his first touch, an audacious overhead kick that Antonio Gallego clutched on his line.

Antonio Martinez dragged wide for Murcia before Gallego tipped a Tyreeq Bakinson long ranger over the top just past the hour.

The breakthrough for Wednesday almost arrived with just three minutes to go. Will Vaulks swung an inviting set piece to the back post where the advancing Adam Adetoro powered a header that brushed the top of the crossbar.

Wednesday: Charles (Dawson 46), Glover (Flannery 46) Iorfa (Fusire 63), Famewo (Ihiekwe 46), James (Adetoro 46), Fusire (Shipston 46), Bakinson (Glover 63), Windass (Byers 46), Bannan (Vaulks 46), Johnson (Cook 30), Smith (Gregory 46)
