Young trio sign professional Owls deals

11 July 2023

Three young Owls have committed their futures to the club by signing professional contracts at Hillsborough.

Cian Flannery pens his maiden deal having completed his scholarship in S6, with Ryan Wilson and Jay Buchan joining Wednesday from Blackburn and Leeds respectively.

Defender Flannery initially signed for Wednesday at Under-16 level and is delighted to extend his stay with the club.

He said: “I’m buzzing, the new manager has been brilliant with us, bringing the young players up in training.

“Being around the lads has been really good and I had a taster against York on Saturday, and I really enjoyed it.

“I’m glad I’m finally here at this point and now it’s time to kick on.”

Midfielder Buchan was part also part of Wednesday’s squad in York at the weekend, he puts pen to paper having completed his scholarship at Elland Road.

He said: “It’s a pleasure to sign my first contract and I just want to work hard.

“I play anywhere in the midfield, I’m up and down and want to create chances and stop goals as well.

“I was around the first team on the weekend which was great and it’s a big drive.

“I just want to get my head down for the Under-21s and hopefully push towards the first team.”

After spending 12 years at Ewood Park, Wilson spent time on trial with the Owls last season and now signs permanently.

The 18-year-old said: “I’m buzzing to be here, I spent some of last season here so I’m delighted to get the deal over the line.

“I’ve come here for a fresh start and Wednesday have given me that. I’m straight in with the Under-21s and I’ve earned myself a contract.

“I’m a technical player, I can play central midfield and centre back. So, it’s getting on the ball and playing out from the back to create chances.

“Seeing the lads from my age group, who I was playing with last season, getting a chance with the first team, it’s a really good opportunity.”
