Get ready for summer with Fit Owls!

27 March 2023

The Community Programme’s Fit Owls weight management programme is back and here to help you to get fit and eat healthily!

Sessions on the 12-week course include educational information and group exercise and are FREE to attend.

Health Officer James Ball said: "Our Fit Owls programme is tailored around helping individuals to live a healthier lifestyle, where we educate and motivate participants throughout the 12 weeks.

“We have seen some fantastic results from the past cohorts not just with weight loss but with individuals losing inches, reducing their blood pressure and the social aspect of meeting new people.”

The EFL-funded programme has helped thousands of people up and down the country to achieve long-term improvements in weight loss, physical activity, diet and general wellbeing. Individuals on average lost over 5% of their body weight during the course.

One of our current participants, Melanie, has found the course ‘life changing’. She said:  "It's such a friendly and supportive place to improve your fitness, there are no scary memberships or commitments, everyone is non-judgemental and it's been really good for my wellbeing."

What you can expect:

  • 12 free weekly sessions at your local football club
  • Meet other football fans on the same journey as you
  • Learn how to make better choices to improve your lifestyle and health
  • Support through your journey by qualified club staff

To join the course, simply email health@swfc.co.uk to reserve your place.

SWFCCP launches SAFE Mentoring Project

Our Community Programme has joined forces with ‘Learn Sheffield’ and the Department for Education (DfE) to run a new mentoring project that will support vulnerable young people at risk of exclusion, criminal exploitation, low attendance, low attainment and serious violence across Sheffield.

Twenty secondary schools will benefit from the project with the Community Programme’s four new Youth Mentors providing 118 young people one-to-one support every week to create long-lasting behaviour change through informal education and activities that promote healthy lifestyles.

Ben Winter, Deputy Head of Community, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Learn Sheffield, the Department for Education and local secondary schools to provide intensive support for the most vulnerable young people in the city.

“Our focus is to change lives over continuous, sustained periods of engagement with young people and the SAFE Taskforce (Support, Attend, Fulfil, Exceed) will allow us to bring an alternative form of provision to the school setting.”

We have previously provided mentoring in the community for young people at risk of criminal exploitation in partnership with Sheffield Youth Justice Service, South Yorkshire Police, local schools and social care.

One project, Onside Mentoring, has been backed by Premier League Charitable Fund and BBC Children in Need. The SAFE Taskforce will now allow the implantation of this provision within the education environment.

Paul Hebda, Youth and Integration Manager, said: “By directly meeting with each of the schools, we have developed and shaped the schemes of work to suit the needs of each unique individual, ensuring the project is effective at helping those who need it the most.”
