Mentality and character

11 March 2023

A characterful performance delighted Darren Moore as the Owls beat Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park.

Josh Windass’ early strike put Wednesday on their way to a 22nd league game unbeaten and the gaffer was pleased with his side’s mentality.

Moore said: “The lads showed character today and we needed to, this is a former stomping ground of mine so I know this club and what the fans can generate.

“There were 18,000+ in here today, so the atmosphere was there. The boys were competitive and you have to deal with the crowd as well and I thought they did that.

“It’s a good experience for the group, there’s a togetherness between them and they have a good bond. They are getting through their work and it’s a well-earned three points.

“I told them that I’m proud of their performance in terms of their mentality and character today, and we’ll dust ourselves down ready to go again.”

Another club record continues to build as our victory sealed a 21st clean sheet of the campaign, with Moore crediting his side from front to back.

He added: “I was really pleased that we dealt with the crosses because we got the first contact.

“What I wasn’t pleased with was how they could lift their heads and get a cross in the box, we weren’t getting our distances right, so we tried to make some tweaks to stop the balls coming in. We defended our box very well.

“Credit to the boys, I know the backline will get the plaudits but it was a together performance because I can even remember Michael Smith being back there clearing up and doing some dogged work to preserve the clean sheet.”
