Report | Wednesday 1-1 Bolton

17 March 2023

Bolton came from behind to deny Wednesday victory but the unbeaten run extends to 23 games.

That represents half a season of football and although the Owls didn’t have the most productive of evenings, it’s another point on the board at the summit of League One.

Lee Gregory fired his side into the lead but Victor Adeboyejo earned Wanderers a deserved share of the spoils.

The first murmurings came from the visitors, pressing the hosts from the off, but Darren Moore’s men soon found their stride.

And three chances arrived in quickfire fashion before Wednesday hit the front.

Keeper James Trafford did well to thwart Gregory, then Josh Windass glanced just wide and Barry Bannan fizzed a long ranger past the post.

But Bolton couldn’t keep Gregory quiet and fell behind on seven minutes.

Reece James sent a delightful pinpoint cross onto the head of Aden Flint, whose guided header landed nicely for Gregory to find the top corner from 10 yards.

The Owls stayed on top, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Flint troubling the Trotters’ backline, and only rarely did the Lancashire side stray forward.

But when they did on 36 minutes, Wednesday were made to pay. Gethin Jones ran into space down the right and pulled back for Adeboyejo, who slotted into the bottom corner with the aid of a deflection.

Marvin Johnson, back from suspension, came on for the second half and made a decent impact down the left channel.

Bolton had to deal with a flurry of crosses as Wednesday sought to restore the advantage but there was a scare at the other end when Flint tangled with Dion Charles in the box.

There did appear to be no contact, though, and the referee waved away the appeals.

The pendulum swung back in Wednesday’s favour and Liam Palmer saw a rising shot clear the crossbar following good work from Dele-Bashiru.

But that proved the only real opening as the clock ticked down and despite the Owls showing more intent in the closing stages, a point apiece was probably the right result.

Wednesday: Dawson, Hunt, Palmer, Flint, Famewo, James (Johnson 46), Vaulks, Bannan, Dele-Bashiru, Windass (Smith 60), Gregory (Adeniran 78)
