Atdhe at Wembley!

24 May 2023

The Owls’ iFollow co-commentary slot will be voiced by a special guest for our League One play-off final at Wembley on Monday!

Atdhe Nuhiu will make his debut on the mic alongside regular host Rob O’Neill, giving his unique insight during our season finale in the capital.

The former Owls forward will travel from Austria where his current side Rheindorf Altach are close to completing their own campaign, and Atdhe gathered his teammates to watch our incredible semi-final victory over Peterborough.

Atdhe told swfc.co.uk: “I watched both semi-finals. As much pain as I had after the first one, there was as much joy after the second!

“It was a crazy rollercoaster. I was in the hotel with my team because we had an away game, and we watched it all together with my teammates and everybody was supporting Wednesday.

“In the last minute I’m thinking ‘just one more ball into the box!’, and that’s what happened, and it was amazing.

“My teammates were happy but obviously I was even more happy. Anybody who was sleeping in the hotel at this time, they will have probably woken up!

“Even now, I don’t know what Liam was doing in the box! It’s like God wanted it to be him who scored, football always writes its own story and it’s nice that it was him.”

The Kosovan international is no stranger to Hillsborough in full voice and he praised the outstanding support in S6 last Thursday.

He added: “I know what Hillsborough can bring when it’s packed and obviously we saw how full it was and what it means to play there.

“I know that after the 4-0 it was difficult but I think if you fill a stadium like this after a defeat in the first leg then I’m pretty sure the supporters came to watch the game hoping they will turn it around.

“I’m sure most of them came, not for the sake of it, but hoping that we are going to turn it. Their prayers came true.”

The 33-year-old was part of the Wednesday side that last reached Wembley in 2016 where a late Hull strike denied the Owls a Premier League return in the Championship play-off final.

Atdhe has fond memories of that day, most notably the reception from Wednesdayites before, during and after the match.

He continued: “Our journey to get there was incredible, obviously the outcome was not, but after the game you looked at the supporters and they applauded us even after we lost, it was full of blue and white and it was an incredible thing to be a part of.

“Playing at Wembley is unique. You go there and you feel strong, as a club and supporters you feel together. I remember going from the hotel to the stadium on the team bus and the people on the road, the way they greeted us on the way was incredible.

“I still speak with Palms and Baz a lot and I’m happy for them to get the experience to play at Wembley again, and I’m really confident they will do it, Barnsley have done well but I believe in Wednesday.

“The team has broken records and that speaks for itself, you don’t do those things just by playing good football, you need good characters and team spirit to achieve these things. Whenever I have watched them from afar, they have been on top of the other team this season.”

Atdhe will swap the pitch for the press box under the famous Wembley arch next week and is hoping his maiden broadcast outing ends in success.

He concluded: “It’s very nice for me to be back, for me and Wednesday there is a great connection, and I was honoured to wear that shirt. I love the club, it’s special for me and I hope for the very best outcome.

“I haven’t done commentary before, but I will do my best! Hopefully we have a good result and the positive vibes will come.

“I have not been in the press box before so it will be a new experience for me, there’s a bit of pressure but I hope I don’t make any stupid mistakes!

“When I left the club I said ‘I leave as a player but I’m a supporter’ and that’s why I am now one of them and they know that I care and I feel privileged for the way they feel about me.”
