They will be massive for us in the play-offs

10 May 2023

As Wednesday warm up for the play-offs this week, Michael Smith says the supporters will have a key role to play.

The 20-goal striker was full of praise for the fans after our 1-0 win over Derby on the final day of the regular season.

Explaining his move to Hillsborough ahead of the campaign, Smith highlighted the support as one of the big factors when making the switch to S6.

And while the forward enjoyed the celebrations on Sunday in front of the Kop after bagging his 20th goal of the season, it’s a moment at Shrewsbury the week before which remains on Smith’s mind.

“The fans have been exceptional all season and were one of the reasons I wanted to come here and play my football,” he said.

“You saw them at the end on Sunday but the massive thing for me was the away fans at Shrewsbury last week.

“The fans staying behind at Shrewsbury was huge. I don't think really enough has been made about that.

“Obviously, we didn't get automatics but they stayed and clapped us off and cheered us and I thought it was a real poignant moment.

“They stuck with us until the final whistle and they are going to be massive for us at the play-offs.

“Our home record speaks for itself. It's a tough place for people to come and the fans are just as much of a part of it as we are.”

Our top scorer continued: “As a striker you pride yourself on goals and I’m delighted to get to the 20-mark.

“You have to have confidence in your ability and thankfully I have managed to get there.”
