International break, hard work and looking forward

17 November 2023

The current international break is an important one for the Owls.

For manager Danny Röhl, it’s offering plenty of opportunity for intense work on the training ground with his players away from the fixture programme.

In the lead-up to the break, the German coach described the week as a chance for a ‘mini pre-season’ with the boys, while also analysing in depth what has gone before.

Röhl explained: “We have trained really hard in the last four weeks working on all things we have to do.

“After a defeat like on Saturday, if you are a player, coach or manager then normally you want to play the next game immediately to make it better.

“But now, we take all the things from the first four weeks.

“As coaches we can now have the feeling from the players and from each other to say, ‘who is able to do this? Who is able to do that’?

“We will take a lot of feedback from the first weeks and find good solutions for the future.”

The players have carefully followed an intense programme behind the scenes this week in preparation for the busy festive fixture schedule on the horizon.

Our league campaign resumes a week on Saturday away at Birmingham City.

“During the international break we will train stronger on the physical side of it,” the manager said.

“It will be a little bit like a pre-season for one week to train hard and improve our fundamentals to be ready for December, with a lot of matches and not so much training.

“We find good solutions between training hard and recovery but when we have recovery, it's more about work on the mind, with videos, and maybe some soft training sessions on the pitch.

“We learn from every match and I am convinced if we play at 100% then we can do it, it’s a long way, there are many games to go but we need 100%, anything less and it’s not possible.

“The good thing about the international break is you can recover the players and come back with more of them in good shape, the intensity from the load can make them stronger as we go forward.”
