Back to basics

7 October 2023

Caretaker manager Neil Thompson said the Owls went back to basics following the stalemate with Huddersfield on Saturday.

A maiden home clean sheet of the new Championship season yielded a hard-earned point and Thompson explained the importance of putting that building block in place:

“We went back to basics today and getting that clean sheet was vital, it’s the foundation of everything you need to for a team to succeed.

“It wasn’t the best game in terms of chances, I don’t think either keeper was really worked, but from our point of view, that clean sheet is a big positive.

“The lads gave it everything they had and left everything on the pitch. We’d like to have nicked it but you have to make sure if you don’t win it, you don’t lose it.”

Thompson shuffled his pack at Hillsborough and had no concerns over the selection process, noting ‘it’s part of the job’.

He added: “I’ve been asked to step in and take today’s game, I’ve done it before and you can’t be afraid of making decisions, it’s part of the job.

“Some players had knocks and others were those decisions. You can’t please everyone in the squad, for those that have the shirt they have to hold onto it and for those who haven’t, they have to work hard to get back in, it’s part and parcel of football.”
