We must work hard to improve

25 October 2023

Owls manager Danny Röhl has seen positives in his short time at the club but has stressed the need for vast improvements as his side went down 3-0 at Plymouth on Wednesday night.

For 40 minutes of the first half, Wednesday largely bossed the game at Home Park but failed to capitalise on promising moments.

Then, in a flash, the game slipped away as Plymouth scored two goals in as many minutes on the stroke of half time.

From there it was a mountain for the Owls to climb in the second half and a Plymouth third goal 15 minutes from time firmly sealed maximum points for the hosts.

Röhl said: “We are a little bit unlucky at the moment and then we concede a free kick near the end of the half – it was a great free kick.

“After that it turned a lot of things in the game and the opponent became stronger and then we made a mistake from building up and concede a second before the half time break.

“For me it was clear that if we could score the next goal we are back in the game because there would be a feeling we can do this.

“We tried everything but in the end we conceded a third goal and then that’s the match done.

“When I saw the supporters after the match, they support us very well and it’s hard to speak about this defeat because we wanted to earn something, it was our big goal today but the result is not good.”

The manager continued: “The first 10 days I am here, I can see a direction and how we want to play but it’s not about doing the right things for 25 minutes or 60 minutes – you need to do it for 96 minutes to go forward and that must be our goal.

“Now it’s about recovery and being ready to go again on Sunday, it will be a tough race until the end of the season but we have to be ready for this and I have the feeling in the locker room the guys are ready but we have to start to take points.

“At the moment, it’s not in the goal - it’s over the goal, at the side of the goal and it’s what we have to work on and be stronger in this.

“It was clear when I took the job it will be a tough race, it’s a tough league with a lot of quality but I spoke about being brave and I am convinced about the club.

“We want to create an identity. It’s about intensity and we need to build up the moments in training – more sprints, more pressing situations, more deep runs - all the things we must build up.

“I have seen good parts in the games but not enough at the moment. We can do this but we have to start taking points and the next opportunity is Sunday.”
