Match Pack: Owls v Sunderland

Wednesday v Sunderland
Friday 29 September

The Sky Sports cameras return to Hillsborough on Friday night as Wednesday and Sunderland go head-to-head in the Sky Bet Championship.

It has been a tough start to 2023/24 for the Owls and Xisco, though the Wednesday manager is hopeful that first win of the season is right around the corner.

After a positive start to last weekend’s clash at Swansea, the Owls fell away after conceding from the penalty spot.

The defeat left Wednesday at the foot of the table.

Prior to their 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Cardiff last Sunday, Sunderland had been in strong form.

The Black Cats were unbeaten in five, including victories over Rotherham, Southampton, QPR and Blackburn.

Tony Mowbray’s side are fifth in table heading to S6.

Following dialogue with our Supporters Engagement Panel, a minute’s applause will be held ahead of tonight’s clash with Sunderland as we pay tribute to Maddy Cusack, who sadly passed away last week aged just 27.

Maddy featured over 100 times for Sheffield United Women whilst playing a key role in the club’s marketing department.

Supporters have also arranged a minute’s applause for the 28th minute of the game in honour of Wednesdayite Liam Rodgers, who sadly passed away this week aged 28.

Liam was a popular figure and a regular at Owls matches home and away, and his presence will be strongly missed by everyone associated with Wednesday.

Our sincere thoughts and condolences are very much with Maddy’s and Liam’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

As always, we remind supporters to arrive early to avoid unnecessary queues on matchday.

Please scan the barcode on entry, not the QR code on your Season Card.

The Hillsborough light show will illuminate the stadium as the players emerge from the tunnel before kick-off.

*Due to the speed and frequency of the light intermittence, we strongly advise anyone with a photosensitive disorder to show caution before entering the stadium.

Wednesday: No fresh injuries were reported on Wednesday during our pre-match press conference.

Josh Windass was on the bench at Swansea after picking up a knock in the clash with Middlesbrough.

Sunderland: Bradley Dack (hamstring) and Pierre Ekwah (dead leg) are expected to miss out on Friday.

Jewison Bennette could return after recovering from a recent illness.

Eliezer Mayenda, Jay Matete, Timothee Pembele and Corry Evans have all been sidelined in recent weeks.

XISCO: “We can change nothing in the past but we can learn from our mistakes and right now, our big focus is towards Friday night.

"We have made some mistakes sometimes. We need to find the balance, one of the key things in the Championship is to try and find the clean sheets and arrive in more dangerous situations for our strikers."

BANNAN: “We understand the frustrations of the fans because as a fan you just want your team to win. But this is when we need them the most. Without them last season - you think back to the Peterborough game -a we wouldn’t be where we are right now, so this is a call to keep behind the players and help us get that win.”

MOWBRAY: “We have to take the positives out of last weekend (1-0 loss to Cardiff). It’s a game of fine margins and my message to the players is to keep going. Sheffield Wednesday are fighting for every point. We have to be professional and impose our style of play on the game but be mindful of the threats they carry.”

The EFL, Premier League, FA, FSA, PGMOL, LMA and PFA have come together this season to implement a series of measures to address behaviour across the game.

This includes new policies, procedures, and regulations to eradicate unacceptable conduct on the pitch, on the sidelines and in the stands.

The new measures build on the work launched last season to combat dangerous and illegal fan behaviour, supported by the ‘Love Football. Protect the Game’ football-wide campaign.

We are also reinforcing the importance of all supporters staying within EFL Ground Regulations, which can be found HERE
