Obituary | Mark Pearson

6 September 2023

Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Mark Pearson at the age of 83.

Born in Derbyshire on 28 October 1939, Pearson joined the Owls on 4 October 1963 after starting his professional career with Manchester United.

His debut for the Red Devils came in sad circumstances, facing the Owls at Old Trafford in the hosts’ first game following the Munich Air Disaster.

Pearson, affectionately known as ‘Pancho’ due to his long sideburns, got off to a strong start in S6 after his move across the Pennines.

The forward scored 11 goals in 42 games at Hillsborough and may have bagged many more were it not for successive leg fractures which ultimately ended his time with the Owls.

He joined Fulham under former Wednesday boss Vic Buckingham, then Halifax Town before retiring from football.

Our thoughts are with Mark’s family and friends at this very difficult time.
