U21 goals: Burnley v Owls

20 September 2023

The Owls Under-21s were unstoppable at Burnley on Tuesday afternoon romping to a 4-0 win over the Clarets.

Following a torrential downpour over the Pennines, the game was switched from the Lancashire FA to Burnley’s Training Centre for the noon kick off.

Goals from Joey Phuthi, Bailey Cadamarteri (2) and Favour Onukwuli earned the points for Neil Thompson’s side.

It was the perfect response from our Under-21s after suffering a first defeat of the campaign against Charlton last time out at Hillsborough.

In a near-perfect performance, Wednesday had a golden chance to lead midway through the first half but for Clarets keeper Charlie Casper saving a Cadamarteri penalty.

But just moments later, Wednesday regrouped and led through Phuthi and from that point, there was no holding back.

Just before the interval, Casper again kept out Cadamarteri with a smart save down to his right but the Owls striker was not to be denied his goal.

Five minutes after the restart, the young striker pounced on an under hit backpass and, after successfully challenging the goalkeeper, ran through on goal to tap into an unguarded net.

Onukwuli put the game to bed 15 minutes from time with a wonderful solo effort, advancing down the left flank before finding the far corner with a low strike.

Wednesday, though, were not done yet and there was time for Cadamarteri to add to his tally five minutes from time guiding a header from 12 yards past the outstretched arm of Casper.

XI: Charles, Reed, Adetoro, Maltby, Siqueira, Shipston (Buchan 80), Glover, Onukwuli, Fusire (c) (Wilson 80), Phuthi, Cadamarteri (Cook 86)
