Harsh words said, now the talking stops

4 April 2024

With harsh words and home truths spoken after the Easter Monday defeat at Middlesbrough, Barry Bannan has said the time for talking is over and now it’s about delivering on the pitch.

The captain gave an open and honest interview on Thursday morning ahead of another crucial weekend in the Championship that sees us head to QPR.

“We’ve had harsh words, now the talking needs to stop and we have to start showing it on the pitch,” the skipper said.

With six games to go, Wednesday remain in the battle survival.

A win in the capital could see the Owls jump out of the bottom three but with QPR hitting form at the right time, the task will be tough in West London.

“The manager wasn’t happy, the players weren’t happy and there were loud words exchanged,” Bannan said of the Boro aftermath.

“There were a few home truths told which was needed. We are going to lose games throughout the season but there are ways of losing and Monday was a bad way.

“We need to make sure it doesn’t happen again. During the season when we’ve had bad performances we have always bounced back and we need to get back to that.

“We’ve had meeting and inquests and hopefully in the last six games we won’t see any more performances like that.

“As bad as Monday was, we’re still only one win away from getting out of the drop zone so we need to focus on that.

“We have to be positive going into this game, we need to be focused going to QPR and righting the wrongs.

“But talk is cheap and now we have to look to these six games and put in the performances.

“I know we can come back and kick on. The bare minimum the fans will get on Saturday is 110% from the players and if the right Sheffield Wednesday turn up, then I am confident we can get a result.

“We’re thinking positively and focused on getting the job done. We’re not talking about relegation, we’re trying our hardest to avoid that.”
