Owls to celebrate 5,000th league game

8 April 2024

Tuesday night’s Championship game against Norwich marks a momentous occasion in the Owls’ long and illustrious history – our 5,000th league fixture.

Following our formation in 1867, a Football League meeting was held on 13 May 1892, after which The Wednesday Football Club were placed immediately into the First Division.

The rest is history…

Wednesday are only the 10th EFL club to reach this huge milestone and we will celebrate with some very special guests of honour.

EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch will be in attendance to award the club a presentation plaque, alongside Owls icons from bygone years.

But to kick off, we are proud to unveil the stunning cover of our one-off programme for the Canaries clash.

The design features a montage of legendary Owls figures who have proudly represented SWFC down the years.

Inside the programme, club historians Peter Law and Jason Dickinson delve deep into the passage of time, travelling down memory lane to arrive at the present day.

This souvenir edition of ‘Wednesday’ is certain to sell out and serves as the perfect keepsake for this milestone moment.

We have doubled the print run of this landmark programme and look forward to welcoming you all to Hillsborough for game 5,000.

Watch this space for further announcements on how we will commemorate this special occasion on Tuesday.
