U21 report | Owls 2-0 Wigan

2 April 2024

Wednesday climbed to the top of the PDL2 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Wigan at Hillsborough.

Favour Onukwuli laid the foundations inside two minutes before Jay Buchan missed a second half penalty.

But the Owls, with Kristian Pedersen and Cameron Dawson in the starting XI, brushed that setback aside to put the game to bed through Bruno Fernandes.

It was a dream start as Onukwuli scored from the first attack of the contest, the lively forward firing a first-time shot beyond Matt Corran following an accurate Joey Phuthi cross.

Wigan had a golden chance to level after breaking the backline and Wednesday had Dawson to thank for an instinctive save to deny Abdi Sharif from close range.

Phuthi was dangerous down the right and this time found Fernandes in space but the shot was smothered by Corran.

The start to the second half could have mirrored that of the first when the Owls were awarded a penalty.

Onukwuli was felled by Jack Bates in the box but Buchan’s spot-kick was beaten out by Corran.

Wednesday continued on the front foot, with Onukwuli, Phuthi and Gui Siquiera all seeing chances go begging.

But the second goal did arrive on 57 minutes. Mackenzie Maltby picked the pocket of Bates on the edge of the box, drew Corran from his line and squared for Fernandes to slot home.

Maltby went solo moments later, forcing an acrobatic Corran save after unleashing from the edge of the area.

Phuthi went on a long-busting run in the closing stages only for Corran to parry his shot clear, Buchan fired wide on the angle and substitute Luke Cook spurned three opportunities but the earlier damage was sufficient for Wednesday to claim pole position.

Wednesday: Dawson, Siquiera, Adetoro (Thornton 77), Pedersen (Reed 46), Otegbayo, Brennan, Phuthi, Maltby, Fernandes (Cook 83), Buchan, Onukwuli
