We control what we control

18 April 2024

With a hugely tense weekend ahead, Michael Smith is adamant that his side’s focus is squarely in the home camp.

A raft of clubs are anxiously looking over their shoulder at the bottom end of the Championship table, including Blackburn, who host the Owls on Sunday.

The day before, our relegation rivals are all in action, and Smith says a win at Ewood Park is the only aim, regardless of results elsewhere.

He said: “It doesn’t matter what the results are on Saturday, we need to pick up three points on Sunday.

“We can only control what we can control. We’ve got a real chance. We are one point behind with nine to play for. We are confident we can do it.

“We’ll be backed by over 7,000 fans at the weekend, which is incredible. It’s a huge game, but all three are huge.”

Smith, who recently returned to the starting XI and put his name on the scoresheet during the Norwich comeback, is determined to help Wednesday over the line.

The striker is hungry for more goals – but will take just one more if it means survival:

“I’m always confident I can score goals, whether that’s in the Championship or League One, the goal is still the same size!

“I’d liked to have scored more this season but if I get one more and it keeps us up I would take that all day long.

“Relegations are awful, they can spoil your summer and I don’t want that feeling again.”
