Report | Coventry 4-1 Wednesday

6 February 2024

Wednesday’s Emirates FA Cup journey reached its end as familiar foes Coventry romped this fourth round replay 4-1.

The cup success represents City’s third win over the Owls this season from four attempts.

Kasey Palmer gave the Sky Blues an early lead before Bailey Cadamarteri promptly equalised.

But Coventry stormed into round five with a quickfire second half scoring spree, with Haji Wright’s header following a Callum O’Hare brace.

It was an explosive start in the Midlands as both teams found the net inside 10 minutes.

The hosts hit the front on three, with Palmer slaloming across the box before firing low across Pierce Charles into the bottom corner.

But the response was positive, with neat passing movements in the final third, and Wednesday were level seven minutes later.

After Coventry failed to deal with a teasing Will Vaulks cross, the ball landed kindly at the feet of Cadamarteri, who stabbed home off the far post.

The pendulum then swung back in favour of City and O’Hare went close with a rising snapshot.

Charles was then at full stretch to deny the same player before Wright flicked Josh Eccles’ feed inches wide.

The first half played out as an even affair but Coventry were out of sight following a three-goal blitz in eight minutes after the break.

Palmer was the architect on 50, slipping O’Hare inside the area with a deceiving pass and the latter finished with some aplomb.

On 56, O’Hare doubled his tally, jinking into the box on the angle and smashing a fierce drive beyond Charles.

And two minutes later it was all but over. Jay Dasilva delivered an inviting cross from the left that leading scorer Wright glanced in from close range.

The remainder of the cup-tie was academic as Coventry took off match-winning duo Palmer and O’Hare with the result in no doubt.

For the Owls, focus returns to the Championship, where a crucial clash with Birmingham awaits on Friday evening at Hillsborough.

Wednesday: Charles, Siqueira (Palmer 46), Ihiekwe, Famewo (Bernard 46), James, Vaulks, M Diaby (Hendrick 62), Musaba (Reed 62), Wilks (Phuthi 62), Cadamarteri, Fletcher
