Report | Huddersfield 4-0 Wednesday

3 February 2024

Huddersfield took a firm grip on the relegation scrap with a resounding 4-0 win over Wednesday.

Matty Pearson opened the second half floodgates, Josh Koroma bagged a brace and Sorba Thomas was also on the scoresheet.

Wednesday did have chances, particularly in the early throes of this basement battle, but couldn’t penetrate the Town backline and paid the price.

The Owls were actually first to show in the final third and twice went close inside 10 minutes. Former Wednesday defender Tom Lees got a crucial touch to Iké Ugbo’s goalbound hit and Rhys Healey cleared Michael Ihiekwe’s header off the line from the resulting corner.

That key intervention was new signing Healey’s last involvement as he headed down the tunnel midway through the opening period nursing a groin injury.

With no sign of what was to follow, Town fans had to wait until 10 minutes before the break to see their side craft a chance when Thomas raced in on the angle and forced a fine save from James Beadle.

It was a similar story at the start of the second half, Wednesday shading possession, but little real action of note at both ends of the pitch – until Huddersfield suddenly took control with two goals in as many minutes.

First, on 68, Thomas’ inviting corner was nodded home by Pearson then on 70, Koroma broke free on the counter and advanced on goal before slotting calmly beyond Beadle.

The Terriers were hungry for more and found the target twice in quick succession to leave the Owls shellshocked.

With 76 minutes on the clock, Thomas cleverly controlled a high diagonal ball and raced forward to plant into the back of the net.

The hosts were still not satisfied and added a fourth with 10 minutes to go. This time Koromo bore down on goal after a defensive mix-up and held his nerve to round Beadle and slam home from close range to complete the rout.

Wednesday: Beadle, Valentin, Bernard, Ihiekwe, Pedersen (James 82), Palmer, Bannan (M Diaby 82), Gassama, Musaba (Poveda 73), Ugbo (Cadamarteri 62), Smith (Wilks 73)
