We focus on our 16 games to go

7 February 2024

Danny Röhl insists focus turns to the Owls’ final 16 games of the season following our Emirates FA Cup defeat to Coventry on Tuesday evening.

Wednesday were beaten 4-1 in the fourth round replay at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and with Birmingham making the trip to Hillsborough in just two days, attention is fixed on our remaining league campaign.

Röhl said: “I think we made a good first half, but we conceded three goals in eight minutes in the second half and this is not good enough at this time.

“It’s a big decision as a manager, you need to think about the cup game, but you play again two days later in the next important match in the league.

“From tomorrow, we focus on our 16 games to go. This is my job and I know this is what we have to achieve.

“The goal is to stay in the league and we have Birmingham on Friday and we need to be ready for this.”

With a quick turnaround of games, Röhl shuffled the pack against the Sky Blues, giving an opportunity to academy players Gui Siqueira from the start, and Sam Reed and Joey Phuthi from the substitutes bench.

The manager added: “I have to look at the whole picture. I saw some good academy players and it was good to see them on the pitch.

“When I look to our load performance, in terms of running and sprinting, I saw a big gap to the other two games, then you need to decide as the manager.

“Maybe you make the same selection and you try it again, but I have to look at the whole picture and it was my decision to make the rotation and leave some players at home.

“They trained well in the morning and now our focus is Birmingham.

“We need a good performance on Friday but also a result. I can understand people are disappointed, the results in the last weeks are not what we want but now we go forward.”
