Coventry, players back, potential debuts and more…

There is plenty to ponder for Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl ahead of Saturday’s clash with Coventry.

After a full week of training, the boss has fresh options available ahead of our return to Hillsborough.

January loan additions James Beadle and Iké Ugbo come into contention with a good week’s training under the belt alongside their new teammates.

George Byers returns from suspension and fellow midfielder Will Vaulks will be pushing for a place in the XI after recovering fully from injury.

Asked about his team during Thursday’s pre-match press conference, the manager said:

“Will Vaulks is ready, he trained the whole week and is available. It will be interesting for the starting 11 and let’s see what I decide.

“I have something in my mind but with the final decision, maybe it can be on Saturday morning after I have slept on it!

“Tomorrow will take us in the right direction but the final decision will be on Saturday from my side and we go forward and look what we can do against a strong opponent.”

There has been a shake-up in the goalkeeping department with Beadle joining on loan from Brighton, while Devis Vasquez has returned to parent club AC Milan.

The manager continued: “I want to see a battle between the goalkeepers, it’s part of the high performance culture I want to have.

“Since we signed James, honestly, the whole goalkeeper group felt immediately there was a different challenge and this is what I like.

“Cameron has done well these last weeks and now we have a new battle with the goalkeepers and we will see what is the decision at the weekend.”

Likewise with Ugbo, the Troyes loanee has become better acquainted with the squad this week.

“It’s a process from the last week,” Danny added. “It has been good for Iké to know our intensity and I think he felt it yesterday in the training as well, it was a good session.

“It is fantastic to see how we can bring the players closer and closer and it is important in the tactical meeting that he understands the details.

“But first, it was important he feels the intensity and is ready for this.

“We know it will be a hard match on Saturday against a difficult opponent.

“Coventry are on a good run and are strong. They are doing well, they are aggressive and have good solutions with the ball.

“We have to learn from the first game and do some things a little different but for us, it is about bringing our intensity to the pitch and if we do this we will have a good game.

“But at first we have to invest in our basics.”

Elsewhere, Callum Paterson is ruled out this weekend after suffering an injury setback as the manager explained:

“With Callum it’s difficult at the moment, he will be unavailable for the next bit of time, but we’ll have a look what we can do.

“It’s not just about his head, he also has a problem with his knee, and it’s about doing what we have to do to make him fit as soon as possible."
