Report | Wednesday 1-2 Coventry

20 January 2024

A Ben Sheaf brace put Wednesday to the sword as Coventry emerged 2-1 winners at Hillsborough.

The Sky Blues skipper netted either side of half time to put his side in control.

Josh Windass pulled one back but the Owls couldn’t find a way through to equalise.

The first half, end to end for large periods, was punctuated by a moment of real quality that broke the deadlock five minutes before the break.

Sheaf took possession 20 yards out, swivelled to ride a sliding challenge, and curled an unstoppable shot past diving debutant James Beadle.

Prior to that, there was little action of note. Both sides played with intent and although the visitors probably had the upper hand, neither goalkeeper was truly troubled until Sheaf’s intervention.

There were half chances and plenty of endeavour, with chances few and far between.

The Owls needed a lift for the second half and started well, with Liam Palmer having a fierce hit charged down by Matt Godden.

But just as Wednesday threatened to find a leveller, Coventry broke and doubled their lead on 57 minutes.

Beadle did well to keep out a sharp Kasey Palmer drive and could only watch as Sheaf picked up the pieces from close range.

That sparked a quadruple substitution for Wednesday – and the right response as the deficit was halved on 68 minutes.

Anthony Musaba’s header was parried by Brad Collins and the loose ball fell to Windass, who smashed home from six yards.

Coventry regrouped and stood firm in the closing stages, looking dangerous on the break, and  preventing any Wednesday onslaught.

There was one big scramble in the box in the dying embers and that was as close as the Owls came to salvaging something from a game that Coventry edged.

Wednesday: Beadle, Valentin, Ihiekwe (Famewo 60), Bernard, Johnson, Vaulks (Cadamarteri 60), Palmer (Wilks 87), Bannan, Gassama (Musaba 61), Windass, Fletcher (Ugbo 60)
