Report: Southampton 4-0 Wednesday

13 January 2024

Southampton flexed their promotion credentials as Wednesday were beaten 4-0 at St Mary’s.

Ther hosts displayed real attacking quality as goals from Che Adams, Adam Armstrong, Ryan Fraser and Sekou Mara extended their unbeaten league run to 19 games, equaling a club record.

There would be no argument from the Owls’ perspective as they were largely second best to the free-flowing Saints.

Indeed, after Fraser’s miscued volley inside five minutes was cleared off the line by Michael Ihiekwe, Southampton saw almost all of the ball.

The hosts won a flurry of corners, all ably managed by an organised blue and white rearguard, and as the first half wore on, Southampton hogged possession without finding a way through.

But that was until the 35th minute when the pressure finally told. Kyle Walker-Peters’ hooked cross from the right was expertly controlled in the box by Adams, who buried beyond Cameron Dawson.

Saints’ tails were up and only a super Dawson save from Walker-Peters prevented a swift second.

Wednesday welcomed the half time whistle and made two changes at the break, with Will Vaulks and Ashley Fletcher introduced from the bench.

And Fletcher made an immediate impact, forcing Gavin Bazunu into his first save of the game with a whistling hit from 25 yards.

Adams blasted over at the other end from a similar position to his goal before a key passage of play lasting no more than 30 seconds saw Southampton go 2-0 up on 63 minutes.

As Wednesday pressed for an equaliser, Djeidi Gassama burst down the left and found the advancing Josh Windass, who couldn’t keep his shot down.

Southampton motored straight upfield, Fraser fed the marauding Armstrong in space in the danger zone and the finish was unerring.

Windass' free-kick forced a flying save from Bazunu but again the Saints hit back as Di’Shon Bernard on the line denied Armstrong.

But the promotion hopefuls were in the mood and added a third on 75 minutes.

It was another lightning-fast counter, this time Adams took the ball down the right and looked up to feed Fraser at the back stick, who slotted home.

Still there was time for a fourth and arguably the pick of the bunch with five minutes to go.

A smart four-man, one-touch move had the Owls defence reeling and Armstrong rolled neatly along the six-yard box for substitute Mara to tap into an empty net.

Wednesday: Dawson, Palmer (Valentin 82), Diaby, Ihiekwe, Johnson, Bannan, Bernard (Famewo 82), Gassama, Musaba (Vaulks 46), Windass (Wilks 82), Cadamarteri (Fletcher 46)
