Back with the boys and ready for the run-in

26 March 2024

Iké Ugbo is back at Middlewood Road after a successful spell away from the club with Canada.

The 25-year-old linked up with his international team mates for a crucial clash against Trinidad and Tobago.

A 2-0 win for Canada in Frisco, Texas secured qualification for this year’s Copa America and Ugbo was pivotal in the all-important opening goal, teeing-up Cyle Larin to break the deadlock.

The striker has had a big impact for Wednesday since his loan switch in January and that form has been noted by the coaching staff at Canada.

Ugbo told swfc.co.uk: “It was really busy but really exciting moments for me.

“Getting back with the national team and meeting up with the guys - it was great to be involved.

“I’m just trying to get myself back in the team and push on from there. I spoke to the national manager before I went out, he is trying to change a lot of things, added me back into the team, he’s working on the new younger players too, so it is exciting times.

“A lot of people have seen what has happened this season, the manager is really happy for me that things are clicking at Wednesday and that I’m getting to show myself more.

“Obviously I have been playing well here for Wednesday and I wanted to carry that form on and take it into the internationals, bring it out there and show them what I can do.

“I was happy to get an assist for the team and help us qualify for Copa America.”

Now back with the boys at Hillsborough, Ugbo is focused on the big run-in, starting with Swansea at home on Good Friday.

Asked if ready for the Swans clash after his time away with Canada: “Of course!

“I think that was in our thinking that I would come back fit but everything is fine and I’m ready for the weekend.

“It’s important to manage myself right during these busy times, a lot of travelling, a long flight but I was back in at the club yesterday, I’m doing my recovery work and I’ll be prepared for the big games ahead.

“The team are doing well, we have made progress, it’s in our hands to get the job done and we’ll carry on and look forward to Friday.”
