Could be a special night

7 March 2024

A Yorkshire derby, live Sky TV broadcast, Hillsborough lights and a bumper crowd… all the ingredients are there for Friday night.

Wednesday host Leeds in S6 to kick off a big weekend of action in the Championship.

Chasing automatic promotion, the Whites head to Hillsborough as favourites after a run of 10 wins from 11 league games.

But Danny Röhl’s side have been making waves of their own.

A run of five wins from six has Wednesday on the brink of climbing out of the bottom three.

Three points for the Owls would see a jump up to 16th in the table on the night.

A win for Leeds would see our visitors climb back into the automatic promotion positions, two points off leaders Leicetser.

Röhl said: “It will be exciting for everyone.

“I believe it is historical too as there has never been a team with so few points at the bottom of the table, then come back like us. It shows a lot about how tough this league is.

“Friday is the next opportunity to show what we can do.

“To take so many points in the last games has been fantastic but everyone has seen if we didn’t take the points then it would be tough to even have a chance.

“Sheffield Wednesday is full of passion, hard work, we have a strength to come back after defeats because there is always a belief here.

“We know we can do special things, even if we have setbacks, and this is because of the momentum we create.

“It could be a special night - in football you never know what will happen.”

Röhl added: “In the last weeks and months we have created this moment and now we come to a point where we can earn something.

“We have invested a lot, everybody has supported us well even though it has not always been easy but now we have a good moment.

“We need to keep going, 10 finals to go, you see how close the table is and there are a lot of teams around us now.

“It will be a challenge and I think you will see a lot of movements in the table now, some ups and downs – if you take the win you could immediately jump from a position to six or seven places higher.

“It’s an exciting game, it’s close at both ends of the table and Leeds have done a very good job this season and particularly these last 11 games, 10 wins and one draw, it shows a lot about their quality.

“But, we have also been on a run and creating our momentum, we are at home with our supporters.”
