Report | Ipswich 6-0 Wednesday

16 March 2024

Wednesday had an afternoon to forget in Suffolk as promotion hopefuls Ipswich meted out a comprehensive 6-0 win.

First half goals from Omari Hutchinson, Nathan Broadhead and Cameron Burgess put Town in the driving seat.

They were out of sight when Hutchinson added a fourth straight after half time before Ali Al-Hamadi concluded matters with a brace near the end of a one-sided contest.

Town took the lead from their first attack of purpose on 18 minutes. Hutchinson controlled a short delivery from Wes Burns with his back to goal and span to direct a low drive into the bottom corner.

Wednesday went on to enjoy their only real productive period in which Ian Poveda drew a fine diving save from Vaclav Hladky.

But Ipswich hit back and all but put the game out of reach before the break.

Broadhead was thwarted by a well-positioned Di’Shon Bernard in the danger zone, shortly after which, on 39 minutes, the hosts doubled their lead.

Keiffer Moore’s header crashed against the crossbar from a Leif Davis corner and Burgess was in the right place at the right time to slam home.

Davis then advanced down the left of the area to unleash a fierce hit beaten out by James Beadle, who was powerless to prevent a third goal in first half stoppage time.

Kayden Jackson motored down the right and picked out the advancing Broadhead, who made no mistake with a clinical side-footer to give the Tractor Boys an unassailable lead.

They were not finished there, though, and it was 4-0 just three minutes into the second half.

Broadhead perfectly teed up the overlapping Hutchinson, who smashed an unstoppable low shot beyond Beadle.

It was 5-0 with 10 minutes to go. Jeremy Sarmiento tried his luck from range, Beadle parried, but the loitering Al-Hamadi was on the spot to stroke into an empty net.

And still there was time at the last for Ipswich to complete the rout. Hutchinson jinked down the right and drew Beadle out on the angle before rolling across for Al-Hamadi to tap home from inside the six-yard box.

Wednesday: Beadle, Iorfa (Famewo 77), Ihiekwe, Johnson, Vaulks, Bannan (M Diaby 46), Musaba, Poveda (Wilks 53), Gassama (Valentin 46), Ugbo (Smith 66)
