Obituary – Jackie Sewell

26 September 2016

Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of club striking legend Jackie Sewell, aged 89.

Jackie was a key figure for the Owls between 1951 and 1955, making a total of 175 appearances, scoring 92 goals.

He was capped six times for England, scoring three times, on the international stage whilst with Wednesday.

The Owls broke the club’s transfer record to bring the forward to Hillsborough from Notts County and Jackie played a major role in our promotion back to the top tier as champions in 1951/52.

After proving a hugely popular performer in S6, the Cumberland product switched to Aston Villa, where he helped the Villans to the FA Cup in 1957.

Hull was his last port of call on these shores and overall, Jackie posted incredibly impressive statistics of 227 goals from 510 league appearances.

Our thoughts are with Jackie’s family and friends at this difficult time.
