Hooper praise for strong Owls

7 February 2016

Wednesday had to come through adversity to emerge triumphant at St Andrew’s on Saturday and two-goal hero Gary Hooper has lavished praise on the squad.

The Owls were forced into making two substitutions with Keiren Westwood and Sam Hutchinson suffering injuries before the break.

Add into the mix losing Kieran Lee to injury in the warm-up and then conceding in first half stoppage time and it seemed as though luck had deserted the Owls in Birmingham.

But Wednesday responded with two late Hooper goals to bag three priceless points and the striker said:

“I thought it was a tough game with really difficult conditions. In a way, yes, we could have thought it wouldn’t be our day.

“But we have got the squad here to do things. We defended well and we really kicked on. It was a hard game but we dealt with it all really well.”

For Hooper, two more goals at St Andrew’s has extended the striker’s superb return in front of goal since joining Wednesday.

It’s now nine goals in his last ten games and he added:

“I was pleased with the first goal. It was a great strike I thought and it’s hit the bar and gone in.

“The second goal was a great ball across from Fernando and a nice tap-in.

“Once the first goal went in, we were on top and they couldn’t deal with the big man Atdhe and Fernando and I working off him.

“The second goal then was always coming. It’s a hard place to come and it was always going to be a six-pointer but we’re back in sixth position and looking good.”
