Incredible contest for Under-18s

23 August 2014

The Owls’ Under-18s were beaten 9-3 by Birmingham in an incredible game at Middlewood Road on Saturday.

The Blues’ goal glut came after the game was level at 2-2 but once the floodgates were open, the visitors didn’t look back.

Birmingham raced into an early two-goal lead before Wednesday hit back through Mason Duffy and Franck Betra.

The Midlanders’ then took charge, blitzing the Owls with seven more strikes before Fraser Preston scored a late consolation.

Coach Steve Haslam said: “We fielded a young team today containing eight first year scholars and one Under-16 player but to say it was a poor performance is a massive understatement.

“We didn't reach anywhere near the standards that we expect from the players. Having said that, we must also give credit to Birmingham, who showed their ruthlessness in front of goal throughout the match.

“The first half was largely an even affair but we were prone to making costly defensive errors and this continued in the second half.

“A major plus point, though, was the performance of Jack Stobbs, who played the first half on his return from injury and was a constant threat down the right-hand side.

“We expect the boys to learn from the performance and learn quickly as we look to regroup during the week and respond in a positive manner when we play QPR next Saturday.”

Owls: McDonagh, Foster, Stachini, Law, Brown, Beatson, Stobbs (Conneh 46), Penney, Betra (Preston 46), Tracey, Duffy (Kanteh 68)
