Sheffield Wednesday sports degree begins

2 October 2014

       •    Foundation degree starts at Sheffield Wednesday
       •    Students attend induction at University of South Wales
       •    Unique education programme based at Hillsborough

A new partnership degree programme based at Sheffield Wednesday is now underway with eight students starting their studies last week.

The club have linked up with the University of South Wales to host a new Foundation Degree course in Community Football Coaching and Development and last week students attended an induction week at the campus in Cardiff.

The Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme delivers the two-year course which combines academic and vocational learning in a professional football club environment.

In association with the Football League Trust, the university has developed a unique online distance learning syllabus for individuals wanting to work in the football industry.

During their induction the students met their lecturers, course leaders and coaches that will deliver the programme.

The students, aged over 18, took part in practical coaching sessions and received guidance on what is expected of them of the duration of the course.

The curriculum is designed specifically to enhance the career prospects of new students, those already in employment or current professional players.

It also gives students a direct entry path into further education, with the opportunity to enter university once completed.

Course Mentor Ricky Hunt said: “It was great to take the students down to Cardiff and it was good for them to get a proper feel for the course and find out in more detail what they’ll be doing over the duration.

“It’s a great opportunity for the students who are passionate about working in football and are serious about a career in coaching.

“The link with the University of South Wales and the Football League Trust is exciting for both the club and the students and we’re grateful for their support.”

The students will take part in a further two week residential throughout the course where they will aim to complete their UEFA C and UEFA B Coaching Licences.
