Solid foundations and goals from all angles

21 March 2016

Tom Lees says Wednesday will need to be on top of their game in all areas from now until the end of the campaign.

With little room for any slip-ups in the run-in, Lees is pleased with the balance between defence and attack.

The Owls have been free-scoring in the past two games and indeed have one of the strongest forward lines in the Championship.

But the statistics at the other end make for decent reading too. The Owls have kept 14 clean sheets in the Championship - just three shy of the club record that was equalled last season.

Lees said: “We knew what we needed to do. We needed to keep the solid foundations of the team from last season. We got a lot of clean sheets last year but we all knew that we needed to add goals and that’s what we’ve done.

“Compare it to last season, we couldn’t score enough goals but now it seems that isn’t a problem.

“It would mean a lot if we could get near that record again, we are playing more attacking stuff, so it’s pleasing to be able to do that at the same time.”

Lees’ goal played a key part in the undoing of Charlton on Saturday and after scoring his third goal of the campaign, he added:

“I try and contribute as much as I can, clean sheets are the main thing for me and the boys at the back but we do need to contribute.

“That’s what successful teams do, they will have centre halves who chip in as well.”
