Supreme Buddhist visits Hillsborough

14 April 2015

Sheffield Wednesday played host to a very special guest before our Championship fixture with Charlton on Saturday.

Somdej Phra Wannarat, the highest ranking Buddhist in Thailand, was invited to Hillsborough by new Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

Somdej Phra Wannarat blessed and made merit to every area of Hillsborough as he was guided around the ground by Mr Chansiri.

The supreme Buddhist also consigned merit to the 96 Liverpool supporters who died in April 1989 ahead of this Wednesday’s 26th anniversary.

Mr Chansiri explained: “Making merit and consigning merit through Buddhism is central to the everyday lives of the people of Thailand.

“This brings happiness, good fortune and eternal peace.

“To welcome Somdej Phra Wannarat to Hillsborough was the deepest privilege for myself and my family.

“It was incredibly emotional to embrace Somdej Phra Wannarat into the heart of our club.

“It is without question the highest honour possible for Somdej Phra Wannarat to bless Sheffield Wednesday, everyone connected with Sheffield Wednesday and so importantly the souls of the 96 people who tragically lost their lives 26 years ago.”
