Whelan: I’ll give Wednesday the respect they deserve

1 December 2015

Former Owls midfielder Glenn Whelan has said he fondly remembers his time at Hillsborough.

The 31-year-old made the switch from Wednesday to Stoke in 2008 after almost four years in S6.

And as the two sides are set to meet in tonight’s Capital One Cup quarter final, Whelan says he will give the Owls the respect they deserve.

He said: “We had some good times there, especially the play-off final, things like that.

"I enjoyed my time greatly when I was there. It was probably a learning curve and probably made me the person I am today because I left Man City as a young lad and went to Sheffield Wednesday.

"They gave me my chance, so I will give them all the respect they deserve."

Whelan – now approaching 300 appearances for current club Stoke – says that although the Potters are favourites, Wednesday are not to be taken lightly.

He continued: “We are not going to take any team lightly. They are there for a reason in the quarter finals and so we will show all the respect we can.

"But any team that comes to the Brit and gets a result knows they've had to play well.

"I've been getting a few text messages from people who still work at the club and I had a great time down there, I really enjoyed it.

“You only have to look at the crowds they get to see how big a club it is.”
