Report | Wednesday 2-1 QPR

16 December 2023

A dramatic 94th minute goal from Anthony Musaba gave Wednesday a 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers at Hillsborough.

Bailey Cadamarteri continued his hot streak in front of goal by notching his second strike of the week to cancel out Ilias Chair’s first half opener.

The game had been an even affair until the start of the second half when the Owls took control.

And after Cadamarteri levelled, the dominance was rewarded with just seconds left on the clock, as Musaba smashed home to seal a big three points for the home side.

Despite a relatively end to end first half, almost 40 minutes went by without a clear chance for either side.

Both teams were fired up and looking for the breakthrough but the final ball was often missing from the contest.

That was until Chair opened the scoring for the visitors. The tricky forward made space for himself on the edge of the Wednesday area and hit goalwards, with his fierce strike deflecting in off Bambo Diaby.

The first half came to a close with the Belgian’s deadlock-breaker the only intermission in a low-key opening 45.

Wednesday were quick out of the traps after the break and Will Vaulks’ corner may have needed Hawkeye to intervene as it appeared to catch out Asmir Begovic, but the referee blew for a foul on the Bosnian goalkeeper.

The Owls were tenacious in their pressing game and the Hillsborough atmosphere lifted immensely as Danny Röhl’s boys searched for the equaliser.

QPR played on the counter and Lyndon Dykes touched a Chris Willock cross just wide of Cameron Dawson’s near post.

With just under 30 minutes to go, Barry Bannan went close from the edge of the box with a bending effort seemingly destined for the bottom corner, but the strike only forced an impressive, full stretch save from Begovic.

Wednesday made changes to bolster the attacking intent, one of which was forced as Callum Paterson left the field on a stretcher.

The added pressure paid dividends, starting with a third professional goal for Cadamarteri on 86 minutes.

Substitute Djeidi Gassama played a low cross into a box packed with blue and white shirts, and the jersey donning number 42 placed elegantly beyond Begovic.

The pressure continued from the restart with the Hillsborough crowd roaring the ball forward, and the script writers duly delivered.

Bannan’s deep cross was met by Ashley Fletcher, who nodded onto the post, and Musaba was on hand to smash home the rebound and send the home fans into fever pitch.

Wednesday: Dawson, Valentin (Palmer 71), B. Diaby (Gassama 45), Bernard, Famewo, Vaulks (Fletcher 79), Bannan, Paterson (Buckey 71, Byers 85)), Johnson, Musaba, Cadamarteri
