Owls and Charlton in ten-goal thriller

2 September 2017

Apologies, this video is unvailable.

In an action-packed Under-18 clash, the Owls posted one of their most dramatic of points on Saturday, sharing ten goals with Charlton in South East London.

The game swung one way, then dramatically the other as both sides at one point in the game held a two-goal advantage.

Wednesday went in at the break 3-1 up but after 12 second half minutes, found themselves 5-3 down.

Ben Wilkinson’s youngsters fought back to level the game at 5-5 but had to see out the last few moments with ten men.

In-form midfielder Liam Shaw saw red after picking up his second yellow of the game on 87 minutes.

A goal down after 13 minutes, Wednesday responded in strong fashion with Marcello Benedetti levelling just past the half hour mark.

Owls captain Alex Hunt put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot on 40 minutes and three minutes later, a fine solo effort from Jordan Lonchar put Wednesday in firm control.

But the game was far from settled and Charlton struck inside the first minute of the second period and were level by 50 minutes.

Well and truly back in the game, the Addicks had their tails up and goals on 57 and 59 minutes left the Owls shell-shocked and with plenty of work to do at 5-3 down.

Hunt’s calmly taken penalty reduced the arrears to one after 63 minutes and in the topsy-turvy youth clash, the Owls had the final say with Ben Hughes planting a well-directed header beyond the Addicks goalkeeper to make it 5-5.

Owls: Walker, Dawodu, West, Brennan, Reaney, Gavrilov, Shaw (S/O 87), Hughes (Hornsby 80), Hunt, Benedetti (Rice 90), Lonchar (Swaine 90)
