U18s report: Wednesday 1-0 Derby

21 November 2022

A late goal from Sean Fusire capped a dominant Owls performance as the Under-18s beat Derby 1-0 to enter the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

Wednesday were better in all departments, striking the woodwork no less than three times before eventually finding a way through.

The Owls went into the contest having beaten Burton on penalties but needed only the regulation 90 minutes this time at Hillsborough.

Wednesday looked confident and composed from the start, creating two half chances inside the first 10 minutes.

Bailey Cadamarteri, a threat all night, sent a snapshot wide before Joey Phuthi hit a curling effort on the angle inches off target from range.

Nelson Aideyan volleyed over the top from a set piece as Derby made a rare foray up front but play came straight back to the other end, where Cadamarteri smashed past the post after finding space in the area.

The Owls striker was looking lively in the final third and Rams keeper Callum Moore got down well to keep out one fizzing drive.

It was Rio Shipston, though, who came within a lick of paint of making the breakthrough as his fierce hit from 20 yards was tipped onto the crossbar by Moore.

Frustratingly for Wednesday, the woodwork was struck again with half time approaching.

It was that man Cadamarteri once more, this time executing a delicious lob over the outrushing Moore only to see the ball bounce back into play off the crossbar.

The story was the same after the break, with Cadamarteri causing all kind of problems in the Derby defence.

Twice the frontman went close having burst into the box using raw power and pace.

The Rams, though, could have taken the lead against the run of play. Johnson Osong raced down the left and his cross found its way to Lennon Wheeldon, who skewed wide on the turn.

Wednesday responded with Phuthi spurning a good chance at the back stick, electing to try and pick out a team mate from Fusire’s low cross instead of perhaps going for goal himself.

Moore then denied Phuthi with a smart save down to his right as the Owls sustained the pressure.

On 75 minutes, incredibly, they hit the woodwork for the third time. Jarvis Thornton latched onto a clever Cadamarteri pass, span and shot, but the ball struck the foot of the upright.

Derby broke in an instant and Pierce Charles had to be alert to parry a fierce drive from Wheeldon before the deadlock was finally broken with eight minutes to go.

Cadamarteri was the architect, muscling his way into the area to tee up Fusire, who stabbed home from close range to earn the Owls a home tie with Barnsley.

Wednesday: Charles, Bradford, Flannery, Maltby, Chapman, Tapudzai, Fusire, Shipston, Thornton, Phuthi, Cadamarteri
