Pushing hard

13 September 2012

With the international break over, Wednesday are back in action with a tough test against Brighton on Friday evening.

Former Seagulls’ defender Joe Mattock is pushing hard to make his competitive debut for the Owls since making his summer switch from West Brom.

The 22-year-old had a successful loan stint with Brighton side last season – making 15 appearances and scoring one goal – and, should he be given the nod to start at the Amex Stadium, will be out to make the most of the opportunity.

He said: “Hopefully I’ll play. I have a good bond with Brighton because I was there last season and was in really good form.

“If I do play then I’ll definitely grab the opportunity with both hands.”

Brighton have enjoyed a solid start to the new term and remain unbeaten at the Amex Stadium after two games; a 5-1 win over Barnsley and a 0-0 draw with Cardiff.

But the former England Under-21 international is hoping he can play a part in ending Albion’s run of resistance on home soil.

He added: “I don’t know if I’ll be playing or not because we have got three good left backs in the squad and I’ve been working hard to keep my fitness.

“It has been a bit frustrating not to play but the team has being doing well, so I’ve had to bide my time and it would be great to kick-start my season at Brighton.”
