Under-21s off the mark

15 September 2012

The Sheffield Wednesday Under-21s posted their first win of the campaign on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Coventry at Middlewood Road.

Trialist Josh Windass gave Wednesday a 1-0 lead in the first half which saw the Owls create plenty in the final third.

Coventry levelled after the interval from a free kick but Wednesday regained their advantage late in the game when Matt Fletcher converted his penalty.

Development coach Lee Bullen said: “We should have been comfortably in front at half time having created five or six clear cut opportunities. But we didn’t take our chances and that was disappointing because it allowed Coventry back in the game.

“After half time I was disappointed with our performance. We didn’t show our usual composure and looked nervous and hence, Coventry scored a deserved equaliser.

“But we got the win – a scrappy win – and our first three points of the season which is often the most difficult to get.

“The lads still have much more to give and if they believe in themselves, they will start to show more composure. They are a very young bunch, there’s plenty of room for improvement and they will carry on learning.”
