Owls winger Michail Antonio has been named Sheffield Wednesday’s Community Champion for 2012/13.

Antonio received the accolade in recognition of his work off the pitch this season; helping raise funds and awareness for local charities, initiatives and the SWFC Community Programme.

Representatives from the club’s charitable arm and the PFA presented the player with a trophy on the pitch prior to the Middlesbrough game.

On receiving his award, Antonio said: “Before I became a professional I was involved in a lot of community schemes so I know how important they are and how much they can mean to people.

“I’m pleased that I’ve been able to play a part in the community this season and to win this award really means a lot.”

The Owls star attended dozens of appearances including charity fundraisers, schools, hospitals and sports sessions giving his backing to various campaigns and surprising many unsuspecting fans.

The club’s Community Manager Marcus Brameld, thanked Michail for his contribution, he said: “Having the support of the players is essential to the longevity of the SWFC Community Programme.

"Michail understands the importance of giving back to the community and has gone above and beyond what would be expected of a footballer.

"We look forward to working with him, and the rest of the team, during the 2013/14 season.”
