Monk provides injury updates

9 July 2020

Connor Wickham and Kieran Lee were missing for the Owls on Wednesday evening for the clash with Preston.

Lee was withdrawn at half time against Swansea with tightness in his calf and was to be assessed ahead of the Lilywhites clash.

The duo, though, are in contention for QPR on Saturday and Monk explained:

“Of course, it is not ideal.

“We lost Connor Wickham and Kieran Lee for this game down to fatigue. They felt tightness in their body and when you are on that red line you are risking an injury.

“That’s the reality of the position we’re in and you don’t want to lose players for longer periods.

“I'm not going to use it as an excuse. It is what it is.

“They don't have specific injuries. It is just fatigue.

“There are other players on that red line of injuries so we have to be very careful in those moments, especially with Connor and Kieran's history as well.

“They have expended a lot of energy with how they play so you have to be careful. We didn't want to risk losing them for more than one game.

“We are hopeful they will be fit this weekend.”

Another concern for the Owls was Jacob Murphy’s departure shortly after scoring his goal at Hillsborough.

On that front Monk added: “They are all on the edge and Jacob is one of those. Hopefully it’s not too serious. We just brought him off as a precaution.

“We’ll see how he recovers tomorrow. We have a couple of days and then we go again.”
