Report | Wednesday 1-1 Fleetwood

28 January 2023

Wednesday and Fleetwood must lock horns for a fourth time this season after this Emirates FA Cup fourth round clash finished all square.

Promise Omochere gave the Lancashire outfit a surprise lead against the run of play but Josh Earl’s own goal means a replay at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday week.

The Owls bossed a one-sided first half, Fleetwood showed more intent in the second, but Wednesday edged proceedings overall.

Wilks was a thorn in the Fleetwood side, whether down the middle or cutting in, the forward caused real concern in the visitors’ backline.

One lung-busting run ended with a low drive deflected wide but the signs were good for a dominant Owls display.

Wednesday stroked the ball around with confidence while Fleetwood had to rely on the odd foray into the final third as the opening 45 unfolded.

Jay Lynch was at full stretch to keep out an angled Josh Windass set piece, Jack Hunt scythed a shot from distance just past the post as the Owls assumed almost complete control.

The only thing missing was the first goal, which might have come on the stroke of half time when Liam Palmer looked to tee up Callum Paterson for a tap-in but Danny Andrew read the situation well and got an all-important touch to divert for a corner.

The Cod Army came out after the break a different team, though, and the alarm bells rang for Wednesday when Brendan Wiredu nodded narrowly over from close range.

And moments later, on 51 minutes, Fleetwood broke the deadlock. Paddy Lane delivered an inviting cross from the left, Omochere stooped and planted a low header into the back of the net.

Wednesday responded with a triple substitution, with skipper Barry Bannan on the comeback trail, introduced alongside George Byers and Lee Gregory.

Bannan created an immediate opening for Wilks, whose fierce hit was gratefully gathered by Lynch but the keeper was powerless to prevent the Owls’ next attack bearing fruit on 71 minutes.

Marvin Johnson sent a delicious cross right into the danger zone and Earl, under pressure from the onrushing Wilks, could only volley into his own net.

Wilks then turned provider as Gregory went close with the clock counting down and Bannan had a bullet shot bravely charged down by Josh Vela.

Gregory shaved the top of the crossbar from another Johnson cross and there seemed only one likely winner in the closing stages.

But despite extended pressure, there was no further breakthrough, and these familiar foes will resume battle over the Pennines in 10 days’ time.

Wednesday: Dawson, Hunt (Bannan 61), Palmer, Iorfa, Famewo (Flint 90+6), Johnson, Vaulks (Byers 61), Adeniran (Gregory 61), Windass, Wilks (Smith 87), Paterson
