21s put five past Hull

29 November 2023

The Owls Under-21s turned in another dominant display on the road with a 5-2 win over Hull City on Tuesday night at Dransfield Stadium.

Goals from Sam Reed (2), Rio Shipston, Devlan Moses and Favour Onukwuli earned the impressive victory for Andy Holdsworth’s side.

Having slipped to a rare home defeat against Fleetwood last time out, the response from the Wednesday youngsters in East Yorkshire was strong.

The Owls made four changes with Under-18s top scorer Moses leading the line, while Pierce Charles, Ciaran Brennan and trialist Daniel Ellison were included in the XI.

Wednesday led from the third minute when Reed, wearing the captain’s armband, slammed the visitors in front with a crisp left-footed finish into the bottom corner.

A Rio Shipston penalty doubled the advantage inside the first ten minutes before Reed smashed home his second of the game on 34 minutes from Gui Siqueira’s dinked centre.

Hull fired a warning shot of their own five minutes before the interval with Tyrell Sellars-Fleming pulling a goal back.

But the Owls’ three-goal cushion was promptly restored after the break with Moses applying a smart first-time finish after wonderful wing play from Onukwuli.

Just past the hour and Onukwuli went from provider to goalscorer, latching on to a ball over the top from Moses and, albeit without the cleanest of connections, managed to beat the goalkeeper low into the bottom corner.

Jim Simms scored a consolation from the penalty spot on 70 minutes as the Owls kept up the pace at the top of the Professional Development League, eight points behind leaders Sheffield United but with two games in hand.

SWFC: Charles, Siqueira, Reed, Adetoro (Fernandes 70), Ellison, Brennan, Phuthi, Shipston, Buchan, Onukwuli (Thornton 88), Moses (Cook 70)
